Effectiveness and safety of the insulin detemir versus insulin glargine in combination with insulin aspart at all three premeals in patients with type 2 diabetes

Objective To observe the efficacy and safety of insulin detemir versus insulin glargine in combination with insulin aspart at all three premeals in patients with type 2 diabetes.Methods Sixty-four type 2 diabetic patients were randomized into two groups: insulin detemir + insulin aspart(Det group) and insulin glargine + insulin aspart(Gla group) respectively for 3 months of treatment.Results After 3 months of therapy,the HbA1c of the two groups decreased from 8.8% and 8.9% to 7.0% respectively,the FPG decreased from 11.2 and 10.9 to 6.2 and 6.1 mmol/L respectively,and the 2 hPG decreased from 13.6 and 13.8 to 8.1 and 8.2 mmol/L respectively,and the difference was statistically significant(P0.05).The incidence of hypoglycemia of the two groups was 5.9% and 6.0% respectively.The gaining of body weight of the two groups was(1.3±0.4) kg in the Det group and(2.5±0.3) kg in the Gla group respectively(P0.01).Conclusion Both insulin detemir and insulin glargine are effective and safe in the glycemic control,while the former is superior to the latter in less gaining of body weight.
