Abstract

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficiency and safety of gatifloxacin in the treatment of bacterial infections from respiratory and urinary systems. METHODS Multicenter prospective double-blind randomized controlled clinical study was performed comparing gatifloxacin with levofloxacin in the treatment of 200 patients from respiratory and urinary infection. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by agar dilution method. RESULTS MIC range and antibacterial activity of gatifloxacin against the most part of Gram negative (G -) bacteria were same as levofloxacin; MIC 90 of gatifloxacin against Gram positive (G +) bacteria was twice as that of levofloxacin. CONCLUSIONS In vitro antibacterial activity of gatifloxacin from respiratory and urinary systems, especially against G + bacteria is stronger than that of levofloxacin. Gatifloxacin is a safe and effective new fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
