Abstract

Performance-based animation has received significant attention because of its naturalness, intuition, and its easy-to-use for novices and non-professional animators. However, most existing performance-based systems either require special and expensive device or can only animate low degree of freedom objects such as a rigid body. This paper presents a new performance-based animation technique for novice animators and develops a 2D character animation system. It uses a pen as the prop and maps its movement to the character in real-time,the character's motion is recorded to form an animation. The evaluation result shows that the system lowers the barrier of animation authoring and allows novices to create animation simply and quickly.
