Abstract

Objective To investigate the prevalence of hypertension among the residents of oceanic islands. Methods Hypertension related data were collected by trained staff with a standard questionnaire among residents aged over 35 years. The serum samples of participants were tested for the concentration levels of lipid and blood sugar. Results The prevalence rate of hypertension was 29.06%(37 097/157 698),which increased with age.The standardized rate of hypertension was 24.72% by the age distribution of recent national survey. The controlled rate of hypertension was 22.51%.Women had significantly higher prevalence rate of hypertension(29.35%) than men(28.71%).Conclusion The prevalence rate of hypertension was high with a low controlled rate among the surveyed residents of oceanic islands.Comprehensive measures should be developed for the control of hypertension.
