Abstract

Yuan Haowen was a leading poet and writer during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. In pursuing the further development of poetry based on Tang and Song poetry,he created a new poetic style, which was characterized by innovative themes and aesthetic values. His poetic thoughts were aimed to explore new ways for poetry development by finally going beyond Tang and Song poetry. This paper puts forward the following arguments: 1) his Lun shi sanshi shou(Thirty Poems on Poetry) did not represent his poetic thoughts;2) the tenet that he relied upon to study poetry was sincerity, which was originated from the School of Principle and echoed the interests of Song Learning;3) His research on poetry, which was influenced by Tang poets, however, reflected the spirit of Song poetry.
