Abstract
Objective:To assess the concentration of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in the aqueous humor of glaucoma eyes,comparing with those of eyes with cataract only,used as control,in order to assess the role of HGF in the pathophysiology of glaucoma.Methods: 0 1-0 2ml of aqueous humor were collected from 76 primary glaucoma eyes and 28 eyes with simple cataract,which were used as control.The concentration of HGF were measured with double antibody Sandwich engyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).In view of the normal distribution with 1 Sample K S Test,the HGF concentrations in patient groups were compared,and the statistical significance of the results was analyzed with One Way ANOVA.Results:The concentration of HGF in eyes with simple cataract (n=28) was 685 3143±173 7970 pg/ml (mean±standard deviation),which was significantly lower ( P 0 05) than that in eyes with primary acute angle closure glaucoma (n=20,3219 7451±3299 2441 pg/ml) or primary chronic angle closure glaucoma (n=28,862 4286±255 8851 pg/ml) or primary open angle glaucoma (n=28,1072 5723±504 8850 pg/ml). In addition,eyes with acute angle closure glaucoma had significantly higher HGF concentrations than eyes with chronic angle closure glaucoma or primary open angle glaucoma ( P 0 01),whereas no significant difference was found between groups of chronic angle closure glaucoma and open angle glaucoma ( P =0 815). Conclusion:The higher concentration of HGF in glaucoma patients aqueous humor may indicate a response to injury after glaucoma.
