Abstract
Purpose To investigate the clinical effect of phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with high myopia. Methods 79 cases (116 eyes) of high myopia and cataracts with ocular axial length of 27 - 34.04 mm were involved. All eyes had undergone phacoemulsification with PMMA IOL implantation through an against frown scleral tunnel incision. The postoperative visual acuity and intraoperative and postoperative complications were observed. Results After 6 months to 1 year following-up visual acuity (76.8 %) of 63 eyes was better then 0.5 in ≤30 mm axial length group while that of 13 eyes(38.2%) in 30 mm axial length group was not. Difference of visual acuity between the two group was statistically significant. Conclusion Visual acuity could be improved for high myopia and cataract patients with phacoemulsification and posterior chamber IOL implantation. While the recovery for eyes with axial length over 30 mm was less satisfactory.
