Genetic variations in different levels of masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb. ) in main traits were studied on the basis of the 12-year-old data of provenance tests at 7 test locations and the 11-year-old data of plus progenies at 2 test locations, and the index and strategy in different variation levels on selection breeding for pulpwood in masson pine was also discussed. The results showed that stem volume (V) and wood basic density (BD) were the most important traits in selection breeding for pulpwood of masson pine and, stand and individul selections shoud be based on the provenance selection. V was the first trait in provenance selection for pulpwood. There were different optimum provenances in different regions: the best provenances in the south of range were from the same regions the best ones in the middle of range were from the south of the same region and from the south of range; then the optimum ones in the north of range were from the middle of range (especially N 26. 5°~ 28. 0°). V could be regarded as the only trait in stand selection and both V and BD shoud be considered in individual selection within stand.
