Comparative efficacy of Losartan versus Benazepril in the treatment of patients with renal hypertension

Abstract

Objective To study the effects of Losartan and Benazepril on renal hypertension when they were both used or only one was used. Methods Blood pressure, 24 hours urine protein, blood creatinine, liver function, blood cholesterol, and side effects were compared among 30 patients with Losartan, 27 cases with Benazepril, and 30 cases with both of them before and after treatment. Results The blood pressure had been diminished in the three groups of patients after two weeks treatment, and more apparent in these cases with two drugs after two weeks (P 0.05 ), and more apparent in the groups with only one drug after 4 weeks (P 0.05 ). The blood creatinine diminished in the cases treated with both of them after 12 weeks (P 0.05 ), and no difference in these cases showed with only one of them (P 0.05 ). The urine protein decreased in three groups of cases (P 0.05 ), without apparent difference (P 0.05 ) in the groups with only one drug, but apparent difference (P 0.05 ) in the groups with both of them. There are no changes in liver function, blood cholesterol before and after treatment. There are few side effects using Losartan. Conclusion Losartan and Benazepril both have better effects in decreasing blood pressure, urine protein and blood creatinine than only one of them in patients with renal hypertension.
