Around the theme of the transformation from tradition to modern, modern Chinese intellectuals were on the different paths in the modern progress since their traditional knowledge structure, and the extent were various as well as the degree of acceptance of new ideas. This article tries to take Denglong who was an imperial scholar in late Qing for an example, displaying a form of ideological change which was not generally concerned in the process of modernization. On the basis of old Chinese learning, Denglong assimilated all kinds of new ideas, and made his own ideas into a range between the traditional and the modern.
