Measurement and analysis of the morphology of Han′s third molars in Jiangsu region

AIM:To provide the anatomical basis for the clinical treatment of third molars by studying the morphology of Han′s third molars in Jiangsu region.METHODS:One hundred extracted Han′s third molars in Jiangsu region were studied.The following observations and measures were made:(1) number of cusps,(2) number of roots,(3) the degree of external curvature of the roots,(4) total length,(5)coronal length,(6)coronal width,(7)coronal thickness,(8)cervical width,(9)cervical thickness.The relationship with gender was initially studied.RESULTS: The maxillay third molars of Han in Jiangsu region had three or four(34%,44%) cusps mainly.The mandibular third molars had five cusps(62%) mainly.The roots of third molars of Han in Jiangsu region were single or fused mainly(66%,64%) and more than 50% of the roots with severe bending.The degree of external curvature of the roots of the mandibular third molars and the measurements of maxillary third molars' coronal length,coronal thickness and cervical thickness had significant difference between men and women(P0.05).CONCLUSION:The types of cusps and roots,the degree of external curvature of roots and measurements of third molars of Han in Jiangsu region varied largely.
