A clinical analysis of 12 patients with acute paraquat poisoning

Objective The acute paraquat poisoning has a high mortality rate, in this study,we investigated the proper treatment methods in order to reduce mortality.Methods A retrospective analysis was made on clinical data of 12 patients with oral paraquat poisoning treated in emergency department of our hospital from January 2004 to September 2007.Results In the patients with cute paraquat poisoning,2 cases survived and 10 cases died.The mortality is 80.33%.Conclusion The chance of survival of patients mainly rested with the dose of paraquat and clinical time.Synthesized therapy that including early gastric lavage,effective catharsis,timely hemoperfusion,early applications of antioxidant drugs and adrenal cortical hormone,regulating the organic function and control of infection could reduce the mortality.
