Clinical Investigation of L-Carnitine on Heart Failure of the patients with Coronary Heart Disease and Type-II Diabetes

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of L-carnitine on the heart function and glucose and lipid metabolism in heart failure patients with coronary heart disease and type-Ⅱ diabetes.Methods sixty heart failure patients with coronary heart disease and type-Ⅱ diabetes were divided into conventional therapy group(control group,30patients) and L-carnitine therapy group(therapy group,30 patients).The control group patients were given basic treatment with digoxin,diuretics,angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor(ACEI)or angiotensin Ⅱ receptor blocker(ARB),andβ-blocker;the therapy group were given L-carnitine 5gPd for 15 days in addition to the basic treatment.Heart function and glucoselipid in heart failure patients was observed before and after L-carnitine treatment.Results After treatment,left ventricular end systolic volume(LVESV) of patients decreased significantly and left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) of patients increased significantly in L-carnitine group,accompanied by decrease in blood glucose level.But the changes of blood lipid were not significant.Conclusion L-carnitine can be used as adjuvant therapy to improve the heart function in heart failure patients with coronary heart disease and type-Ⅱ diabetes.
