Abstract
Objective To compare effect of applications of PICC and internal jugular vein catheter in elderly critical patients. Methods According to the time order of hospitalization, 46 patients were divided into two groups randomly: group of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC, n=23) and group of internal jugular vein catheter (n=23). The successful rate of the initial puncture, indwelling time and complications were observed respectively. Results The successful rated of the initial puncture was 100% in PICC group and 74% in another group, which showed significant difference statistically (P0.05). Indwelling time was significantly longer in PICC group than that in internal jugular vein catheter group (P0.01). And there were more correlative infection of catheter, adjacent artery damages and dislocation of catheter in internal jugular vein catheter group, while more phlebitis in PICC group. Conclusion The method of PICC is convenient to handle and less dangerous, produces fewer pain for patients, has fewer complications, doesn't restrain patients' hip movement, and can be remained for long time. It is worth being widely utilized in clinical practice.
