Commentary on Military System of Northern Song Dynasty

Not only people,of Northern Song Dynasty,but also contemporary historians regard the conscription system as main root of‘superfluous military forces’phenomenon of Northern Song Dynasty.From argumentation of three as- pects-land occupation condition,class structure and technological condition,this article points out that the recruit- ing system based on land system of Han and Tang dynasties has lost its surviving soil in Northern Song Dynasty.The conscription system that replaced the former is determined by social and economic conditions at that period and greatly promotes the social,economic and cultural prosperity and development of North Song Dynasty.
