Comparison of the Effect Between Autologous Corneal Limbal Stem Cell Transplantation and Biological Amniotic Membrane Transplantation on Pterygium

Abstract

Objective To explore and analyze the clinical effect of autologous corneal limbal stem cell transplantation and biological amniotic membrane transplantation on pterygium. Methods Eighty-seven cases(98 eyes) with pterygium admitted in our hospital from July 2013 to December 2014 were selected and randomly divided into autologous corneal limbal stem cell transplantation group(group A, 44 cases) and biological amniotic membrane transplantation group(group B, 43 cases). Both groups were followed up for 1 year after surgery. The postoperative corneal epithelium healing time, the recurrence of pterygium and the recovery of visual acuity of the two groups were observed. Results The postoperative corneal epithelial healing time of group A was much shorter than that of group B with statistically significant difference(P0.05). No difference was found in the postoperative recovery of visual acuity between the two groups(P0.05). The postoperative recurrence rate of pterygium was 2.27% in group A, and 13.95% in group B, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(χ2=4.010, P 0.05). Conclusion Both autologous corneal limbal stem cell transplantation and biological amniotic membrane transplantation have good effect on pterygium, but patients with autologous corneal limbal stem cell transplantation have quicker postoperative corneal epithelium healing and lower recurrence rate of pterygium with better treatment effect.
