Abstract
Theme,an important concept in Systemic Functional Grammar, is distinguished by its markedness and unmarkedness. Theme choice expresses speakers' different purpose.Through the analysis of English examples, this paper explores that the drive of markedness choice of theme is pragmatic principle. Its aim is to put emphasis on coherence, give prominence to information transmission, provide textual organization as well as highlight the styles of text.
