Abstract

Objectives To investigate the cardiac morphological changes after closure of secundum atrial septal defect(ASD).Methods Transthoracic echocardiography was performed in 78 patients to measure the end-diastolic diameter of right atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle before and twenty-four hours, three months and one year after closure of ASD.Results Twenty-four hours after closure the end-diastolic diameter of right atrium decreased from(36.14 ±3.15)mm to(28.36 ± 5.24)mm,the right ventricle diameter decreased from(22.61 ± 6.38)mm to(16.12 ± 4.93)mm,and the left ven-tricle diameter increased from(27.83 ± 5.97)mm to(33.64 ± 4.32)mm respectively. On three months and one year follow-up the decreasing of right ventricle diameter was significant, while that of right atrium and left ventricle were less. Conclusions Closure of ASD with transcatheter technique results in remarkable cardiac morphological changes early on,and the right ventricle remodeling needs longer time.
