Agony and Sorrow Hidden in "Gentle and Fragrant" Custom —A Brief Study on Custom Description of SHEN Congwen’s Rural Stories

Abstract

This article briefly explores the custom description in SHEN Congwen’s stories before the War of Resistance Against Japan, emphatically reveals the sorrowful, miserable and bitter implication hidden in the author’s description on so called beautiful and fragrant “Xiangxi Custom”, and then criticizes the mis reading trend on Shen Congwen study since “the New Period”.
