Abstract
Objective The change of platelet activation/aggregation and the effect of magnesium sulfate were discovered in the rat model with carotid thrombosis induced by FeCl 3 , which damaged vascular endothelium. Methods Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups. The rats in normal group and thrombosis group were given 0.9% sodium chloride. The rats in Mg-early group and Mg-late group were given magnesium sulfate before the topical application of FeCl 3 ten minutes and after it seven minutes. After one hour administration, the platelet aggregation and the number of alpha-granule membrane protein-140 (GMP-140) molecule on platelet surface were measured. The vessels with thrombus were made morphological.Results Mg-early group inhibited thrombosis, lightened the weight of thrombus, inhibited platelet aggregation and reduced the concentration of GMP-140. Mg-late group had no distinctive effect. Conclusions Early administration of intravenous magnesium sulfate may inhibit thrombosis and platelet aggregation/activation.
