Abstract

Objective:To explore the effect of enteral nutrition(EN)and parenteral nutrition(PN)on nutritional status and complications after gastrointestinal operation.Methods:Forty-eight patients with selective gastrointestinal operation were randomly divided into PN group and EN group.Patients received PN or EN support one day after operation respectively. The body weight, blood biochemistry examination, nutritional stat and lactulose/mannitol test were detected one day before operation and at the 8th day after operation.Complications and the costs were also observed. Results:The body weight, albumin and transferrin decreased less in EN group than those in PN group, but there was no significant statistic difference;however, prealbumin and fibronectin decreased less significantly in EN group than those in PN group(P0.05).C-reactive protein increased less in EN group than those in PN group(P0.05).The intestinal mucosa permeability, average cost of hospital stay and incidence of complications after operation were significantly lower in EN group(P0.01).Conclusions:Early enteral nutrition after gastrointestinal operation can improve nutritional status and reduce complications of patients and the medical cost is less in comparison with parenteral nutrition.
