Study of morphological evolution responses of Jiangya′nansha Wetland to Yangtze River Estuary North Channel Deep Water Channel Project

Abstract

Based on recent terrain data on the Yangtze River Estuary,this paper utilizes dynamic geomorphological GIS and other professional knowledge to study the morphological evolution of Jiangya′nansha Shoal in respond to the Yangtze River Estuary North Channel Deep Water Channel Project.The main conclusions of this study include: firstly,the Deep Water Channel Project suppressed the head of Jiangya′nansha Shoal from moving downstream,and a lot of sediment deposited at the Jiangya′nansha Shoal which in turn accelerated the height and acreage of the shoal.Secondly,with the tail of Jiangya′nansha Shoal moving downstream,the phenomena of outer bar and inner turned sharply.Therefore,it strengthened the erosion along the south shore of the Jiuduansha Shoal.Thirdly,the project made a great impact on the intensity of the flow and sediment transport,and thus a 2m deep channel along the north line of the dike has been formed.Accordingly,to block up this channel to stabilize the Jiangya′nansha Shoal and the South Jetty is suggested.
