This paper expounds the functions of Derida's two terms traces and substitution in John Hawkes' novel,pointing out that with the effects of the de-constructuring measures like traces and stustitiution,the novel takes on a new parodic textual form as a result of the substitution of plots,the indeterminacy for the superimposing of textual meaning and the uses of genres.The rupture of the chain of the signifier and the signified and the complementation of the genres help to form a independent,open text with the indeterminacy in meanings.
