Observations on the Efficacy of Segment and Stage Acupuncture Treatment for Peripheral Facial Paralysis

Objective To investigate the correlation between different injured neural segments and different stage acupuncture treatments in peripheral facial paralysis.Methods Eight-six patients with peripheral facial paralysis were allocated to group A of 14 cases,group B of 19 cases,group C of 20 cases and group D of 33 cases according to different injured neural segments.Group A had a facial nerve segment Ⅰ injury;group B,a facial nerve segment Ⅱ injury;group C,a facial nerve segment Ⅲ injury;group D,a facial nerve segment Ⅳ injury.All the 4 groups received stage acupuncture treatment.The therapeutic effect was assessed using the criteria for scoring facial nerve function in combination with the clinical symptoms and signs.The sequelae were examined in the patients at the 6-month follow-up.Results There was a statistically significant pre-/post-treatment difference in the facial nerve function score in all the 4 groups of patients(P0.05).There was a statistically significant post-treatment difference in the facial nerve function score between the 4 groups of patients(P0.05).There was a statistically significant difference in the total efficacy rate between group C and D and group A and B(P0.05).There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of sequelae between group C and D and group A(P0.05).Conclusions Acupuncture is an effective way to treat peripheral facial paralysis.The lower the impaired facial nerve section,the better the therapeutic effect.
