Abstract

Objective:To investigate the role of insulin resistance in the etiopathology of gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM).Methods:Fasting serum insulin and C-peptide during 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 0 and 2h were measured by radioimmunoassay in 32 patients with GDM, 30 normal glucose tolerance (NGT) pregnant controls. Insulin secretion was assessed by the homeostasis β-cell function index(HBCI), insulin resistance by the homeostasis model insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR). The differences in HOMA-IR and HBCI between two groups were compared.Results:HOMA-IR was higher in GDM groups (HOMA-IR,2.3±0.3) than in NGT groups(1.4±0.4), there was significant difference( P 0.01), but there was no significant difference of HBCI between the two groups( P 0.05).Conclusion:The increase of insulin resistance may be one of the major cause of GDM.
