Receiver operating characteristic curves analysis of ultrasonography,mammography and combination of them in differentiating benign and malignant breast lumps

Objective To explore the value of ultrasonography,mammography X-ray,and the combination of them in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast lumps. Methods One hundred and sixty-eight masses of 146 patients were examined by ultrasound and mammography X -ray examination,the sonographic appearances and mammography X -ray characteristics were evaluated and compared with pathologic findings. The receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve generated by the method of score was used to evaluate the value of ultrasonography,mammography X-ray and the combination of them in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast lumps. Results The area of the ROC curve of ultrasonography, mammography X -ray and the combination of them was 0.882,0.866,0.934. The combination of ultrasonography and mammography X -ray was the best in diagnosing breast lumps,and ultrasound was better. Conculsion Ultrasonography, mammography X -ray are both effective methods in differential diagnosis of breast lumps,and the combined application has a higher diagnostic value.
