Abstract

According to the characteristics of dam break at plain reservoirs, with the dam site as the objective for study, instantaneous and gradual dam break models are developed. With the models, the width of dam break, the maximal flow rate and the discharge hydrograph are derived. The results provide an initial boundary condition for 2-D flood simulation at dam break and also a scientific basis for automatic water regime prediction and optimal dispatching of reservoir floods. With dam break at the Jiahezi Reservoir as an example, the results of the two models are compared, and it is shown that the models accord with the reality.
