On Equal Opportunity in Higher Education from Sociological Perspectives

The issue of equal opportunity in higher education is a heated topic that many Chinese people are concerned about and the emergence of this issue has a lot to do with the political,economic,and cultural differences in different areas of China.However,the nature or essence of the socialist society requires that we shouldn’t allow this kind of differences to continue and even widen in the field of higher education just because the above differences in our national conditions.Social policies and systems may contribute to the elimination of the inequality of opportunity in higher education.Hence,we can take the following strategies: first,the factors of regional population and the arrangement of universities should be combined,and under the support of the central government,full play should be given to the initiative of provincial governments to formulate the scope and proportion of enrollment target;second,great importance should be attached to advancing equal opportunities in primary and secondary education;third,the structure of higher education should be optimized;and last,the relevant legal work for higher education should be intensified.
