Pragmatic Ambiguity in English and Chinese

Abstract

Ambiguity is a common phenomenon in any language. That's why ambiguity analysis has been widely used in language teaching, translation theory and practice, literature study and Artificial Intelligence. This paper deals with the pragmatic ambiguity, here namely, Implicature Ambiguity in English and Chinese languages. For this purpose, Grice's Principle of Cooperation is quoted as a theoretical basis for the paper. The Implicature Ambiguity here is mainly composed of Quantity Ambiguity, Manner Ambiguity and Quality Ambiguity
