Abstract

Pragmatic ambiguity is very common in English language.Pragmatic ambiguity may easily lead to misunderstanding to some extent and may influence people's verbal communication.However,the proper use of pragmatic ambiguity reflects richness of language and also produces various pragmatic effects.This paper explores the forming factors of pragmatic ambiguity and analyzes its discourse functions,and proves that pragmatic ambiguity plays a positive role in verbal communication.
