Abstract

Starting from the perspective of culture, this paper attempts to probe into the cultural selection of Xu Yu, a writer of the later romanticism. In his novels, Xu Yu has not only carried forward and enhanced traditional Chinese culture but also exhibited the modern western philosophical consideration and artistic skills, and the perfect integration of these two aspects has rendered Xu Yu’s novels of romance and legend as a unique scene in the history of modern Chinese literature. It is thought that Xu’s literary creation has attained the perfect integration between the classical and the modern, the oriental and the occidental, and the popular and the refined, thus having secured a unique cultural implication and the appeal of modern aesthetics.
