Urban Poverty and Anti-poverty Policy in China

Abstract

With the increase of the urban poverty and the widening gap between the urban rich and the poor,urban poverty has become a cause for concern.Based on statistical data,the paper estimates that China's current urban poverty line should between about 7500-8500 Yuan per capita income and the poor population may reach 50,000,000,about 2 times the current minimum standard and the number of insured.By the impact of regional economic disparities,the proportion of poor people is lowest in eastern,and higher in northeastern and western regions.The study provides analysis of the root causes of urban poverty,and brings forward some strategic choices to release the urban poverty in China according to our national conditions.At last,it proposes some specific countermeasures from the aspects of poverty monitoring,urban economic development,reform of income distribution system,further construction of the social security system,human capital investment increase and expansion of the path of anti-poverty,etc.
