Abstract
Ci Ye,in the books about exegetics,is always considered as a term of explaining Chinese function words,while Duan Yu-cai thinks that Ci Ye is not a term for explaining function words in Shuo Wen Jie Zi Zhu,but not all Mou-Ci-Yes are used as the term for explaining function words.There are totally twenty-five examples of Ci Ye exegetics terms in Shuo Wen.Based on the form of Chinese language,these examples can be divided into seven categories.Whether they are the terms of explaining function words or not depends on concrete analysis of concrete conditions,it isn't always the case.The Ci Ye in Shuo Wen is different from that used by Mao Heng and Zheng Xuan in explaining function words.Xu Shen gave a more detailed and clear explanation for function words.
