Study on disc degeneration induced by injection of transforming growth factor-1(TGF-β1)in intervertebral disc tissue

Abstract

Objective To explore the role of transforming growth factor-1(TGF-β1)in intervertebral disc tissue of normal adult goats.Methods The TGF-β1 was injected into the intervertebral disc of adult goats and saline and basic fibroblast growing factor(bFGF) were used as the negative control and the positive control.Lumbar spinal X-ray and MRI were taken both preoperative and postoperative at 2,4,6 months to observe the image changes,and the intervertebral disc tissues were extracted intactly from the goats which were sacrificed after 6 months postoperative to observe the changes of intervertebral disc tissue by histology methods.Results Compared with the control group,L5/L6 intervertebral disc of goats injected with TGF-β1 degenerated significantly after 6 months.Conclusion TGF-β1 can lead to intervertebral disc degeneration.
