Abstract
Objective:The aim of this study was to use high-resolution ultrasonography to evaluate clinical value of carotid atherosclerosis,to predict coronary artery disease and to analyse the influence of vascular risk factors on carotid artery atherosclerosis. Methods:Carotid ultrasound was performed in 62 patients who had been consecutively examined by coronary angiography, carotid plaque score was also calculated to quantify the extent of carotid atherosclerosis.Meanwhile,we collected risk factors such as glucose, plasma total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein level, and difined as carotid atherosclerosis.Multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between risk factors and carotid atherosclerosis. Results:The more serious the coronary artery disease, the thicker maximum intima-media thickness and the more plaque number, score, area in carotid artery were. There was a statistically significant value.Carotid atherosclerosis reflected coronary artery disease with a sensitivity, specificity and accuracy value of 82.4%(42/51),72.7%i(8/11),82.3%(51/62),respectively.Logistic models indicated that age, blood pressure, glucose,TG and HDL-ch were significant variables. Conclusion:There is a strong and significant relation between carotid artery atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Also, there are similar risk factors between them.Carotid artery atherosclerosis is a marker relevant to coronary artery disease which can be measured non-invasively.
