Abstract
There are more than 100 ordered container vessels of above 7,500TEU in building at present,most of which are scheduled to be launched by 2007and put into operation on the Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific trade routes.Very large container ship has now moved firmly from its concept to its reality.The deployment of 8,000~+ TEU vessels brings about new challenges for liners,shipping trade and container terminal operators.Liners should respond the challenge by reducing vessel numbers in a certain string,changing the ports called and re-organizing the planning of shipping networks.Leading hub ports should respond the challenge by developing new concept terminal and handling systems.Besides,The ports called by very large container ships should not only be the hubs,but also be the platforms of logistics.
