Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of amniotic membrane transplantation for reconstructing conjunctival sac. Methods 31 patients suffered conjunctival sac constriction were treated with amniotic membrane transplantation. Results Areas of implanted amniotic membrane were entirely covered by epithelium at 22~30 days postoperatively. No secondary infection and rejection were persent in 12~36 months of follow up. 27 of the 31 patients were able to wear an ocular prosthesis comfortably. Cosmesis was acceptable. Four patients had recurrent conjunctival sac contracture 3~5 months postoperatively. Conclusion The amniotic membrane has the characteristics of no antigenicity and are easy to obtain. The transplantation of preserved amniotic membrane is a valuable method for the treatment of anophthalmia conjunctival sac constriction.
