Burma’s Relations with the People’s Republic of China: from Delicate Friendship to Genuine Co-operation

Abstract

Relations between Burma (officially known as the Union of Myanmar since June 1989) and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) may be divided into two periods. Prior to the latest period of military rule in Burma beginning in September 1988, this relationship was based on delicate friendship; since then it has been marked by genuine co-operation. This chapter will look first at the historical background of Sino-Burmese relations from the time of Burma’s independence in January 1948 up to the military coup of 18 September 1988, when the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) assumed power, and second at developments which have taken place between September 1988 and March 1996.
