Summary The genusCarexincludes species with true vegetative culms as well as species with vegetative shoots that lack elongate stems. Two terms relating to vegetative shoots inCarexare precisely defined. A brief review of the variation in vegetative shoot form is presented and examples of the utility of vegetative shoots in the taxonomy ofCarexare given. Vegetative shoots should always be obtained by collectors ofCarex, and they should be utilized in taxonomic work. Specific suggestions regarding collection and description are provided.
