Effects of Cycocel and High-Intensity Lighting on Flowering of Seed-Propagated Geraniums

Abstract

SummaryThe influence of Cycocel (chlormequat) as a soil drench (1500 ppm applied twice) and light from high pressure sodium (HPS) vapour lamps was investigated on seed-propagated geraniums (Pelargonium χ hortorum Bailey) cv Sprinter Scarlet. Flowering time was reduced mainly by HPS lighting although a signficant light χ Cycocel interaction was observed. Cycocel-treated plants were 2–4 cm shorter and flowered 17 days sooner than the controls. Together, Cycocel and HPS lighting reduced flowering time by 31 days but the plants were of inferior quality. The best treatment was HPS lighting alone as the plants flowered 26 days earlier than the controls, were 1.0 cm shorter and of excellent quality.
