Abstract

We report a case of advanced liver cirrhosis with unresectable hepatoma for which one-shot chemotherapy and transcatheter arterial embolization resulted in a successful long survival. A 70-year-old woman was diagnosed to have unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma by clinical examinations such as angiography and serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) assay in October 1984. She was treated with intra-arterial one-shot injection of 5-FUR and Mitomycin CR for the first time in December 1984 and hereafter within 2 years, repeated TAE using mainly gelfoam powderR and so-called SMANCS/Lipiodol therapy were performed periodically. Treatment was well tolerated. She has been well during these treatments. A combination of intraarterial injection of anticancer drugs and transcatheter arterial embolization is an effective treatment in the management of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.
