Abstract

Selective cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors are associated with fewer gastrointestinal complications and endoscopic lesions than are prescription-strength nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, few studies have compared over-the-counter (OTC) doses of nonselective NSAIDs with coxibs. In this two-phase, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study, researchers randomly assigned 93 patients to 10-day courses of ibuprofen (1200 mg/day) followed by celecoxib (200 mg/day), celecoxib followed by ibuprofen, naproxen …
