Abstract

This thesis is designed to study the characteristics of movement in Gangryeong masque dance (Talchum) and apply them to the development of Korean dance movements. The related theses and books were researched for theoretically studies and the movements of Gangryeong masque dance in video images were researched and analyzed. The results have revealed that the basic movements of Gangryeong masque dance are classified into sixteen types and based upon Maldduki dance. The basic movements are classified as the movement of Hansam dance strengthening the sky-oriented dynamics of Maldduki; the alternative dance of Maldduki or expressive movements of setting relations between Yangban (the two upper classes of old Korea) and characters; the land-oriented movement of the lower part of the body showing the masculine strength of Maldduki.
