In 2009, in response to the Global Financial Crisis, the Australian Government announced the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan (Nation Building). Under the Plan, funding of $5.238 billion was allocated to the Social Housing Initiative for the construction of new social housing dwellings, with a further $400 million for repairs and maintenance to existing social housing dwellings.
