Community housing as an alternative to public housing

The community housing sector has long been recognised as an alternative provider of affordable housing for low income households, and is characterised by participation by tenants in the decision making processes that affect their housing, and high levels of tenant satisfaction throughout Australia. The fundamental principles of community housing include flexibility and responsiveness in housing management; promotion of fairness, access and social equity; respect for the dignity of individuals and the diversity of communities; and meeting of needs of individuals and promotion of self determination.
