Short Communication: Drug Susceptibility of Pathogenic Strains of "Escherichia Coli" Isolated from Chickens between 1991 and 1995

Abstract

Eighty-seven isolates of Escherichia coli from chickens with colibacillosis in Taiwan between 1991 and 1995 were examined for resisting antibacterial drugs. The susceptibility percentages of the bacteria tested against each of the eighteen antibacterial drugs in alphabetical order were as follows: amoxicillin (31%), apramycin (56%), bacitracin (16%), chloramphenicol (41% ), chlortetracycline (6%), colistin (63%), enrofloxacin (38%) ,flumequine (26%) furazolidone (8%), gentamicin (48%), kanamycin (16%), Iincomycin-spectinomycin (30%), nalidixic acid (23%), neomycin (8%), nitrofurantoin (29%), ofloxacin (65%), streptomycin (3%), and sulfamethazole/trimethoprim (8%). In conclusion, a high level of resistance to tested antibacterial drugs in pathogenic strains of E. coli isolated from chickens was observed in Taiwan.
