Abstract
Y/sup 90/ of high radiochemical purity was obtained by elution with a pyridine citrate buffer (pH 4.0) of a cation exchanger charged with Sr/sup 90/. The decontamination factor exceeded 10/sup 7/, if the eluate was purified via a second ion exchange column. A column charged with 50 mc Sr/sup 90/ yielded an eluate with approximates 9 mc Y/sup 90//ml. To assess the purity of the Y/sup90/ solution, a rapid electrophoretic method was developed, requiring 1% of the total activity. Thus, decontamination factors up to 2.10/sup 7/ can be determined, corresponding to 2 nc Sr/sup 90/ in 40 mc Y/sup 90/. After the decay of the Y/sup 90/ activity obtalned, the Sr/sup 90/ impurity is counted in equilibrium with its daughter. The decontamination factors so determined are compared with those found by the rapid procedure. By studying yield and purity of the Y/sup 90/ product it was shown that columns containing 20 to 50 mc Sr/sup 90/ are suited for routine production of high purity Y/sup 90/. (auth)
