Abstract

Crossbred pregnant heifers (12; 352±12.20 kg BW) divided into 3 equal groups were fed individually either as per NRC feeding standard (T1), 10% (T2) or 20% (T3) higher CP level, respectively. The DM intake did not differ significantly, but R:C ratios narrow down (62:38, 56:44 and 52:48, respectively. The digestibility of CP, EE and NFE was significantly (P<0.05) higher in pregnant heifers fed high protein diet up to 10%, however, reverse trend was observed in case of CF digestibility. The DCP and TDN percent in T2 was significantly (P<0.05) higher as compared to control group, but at par with T3. Body weight gain of heifers and calf birth weight were significantly (P<0.05) higher by feeding 10% higher protein. It was inferred that by feeding 10% higher CP over NRC standards to the pregnant heifers has positive effect on body weight gain, calf birth weight and nutrient utilization.
