Management of powdery mildew of pea with botanicals

Abstract

Eleven botanicals viz., garlic (Allium sativum L.), lantana (Lantana camara L.), tulsi (Ocimum sanctum L.), neem (Azadirachtaindica a. Juss.), drake (Melia azedarach L.), amla (Emblica officinalis gaertn.) buchh (Acorus calamus L.), aloe (Aloe barbadensis Mill.), basuti (Justica adhatoda L.), ginger (Zingiber officinale rosc.) and bitchhu butti (Urtica dioica L.) were evaluated as ethanolic extracts in vitro and in vivo at different concentrations for their effectiveness against Erysiphe pisi, the causal agent of pea powdery mildew. Ethanol extract of A. calamus (1.0%) caused maximum inhibition of conidial germination (98.13%) and germ tube length (82.99%) followed by L. camara, U. dioica and M. azedarach. Field studies revealed that though no botanical was as effective as the standard check i.e. Hexaconazole but among botanicals three sprays of U. dioica (2.0%) showed least disease severity and increased green pod yield.
