This paper provides information on the comparative costs of generally available medium capacity rapid transit systems, based on actual case studies in Australasia. For any given application it will be essential to estimate capital and operating costs on the basis of the local environment, as it cannot be established that any particular technology option has universally applicable economic or financial advantages. The paper demonstrates that busway and guided busway options are competitive with LRT in appropriate applications.
